Vid Švara and Paolo Scariano, members of the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Management of Conservation Areas and Biomedical Analytics, participated at the first TechForum Millstatt (lnkd.in/dhHvHKES), initiated by Technische Universität Wien.

In a presentation "Biodiversität in Wassertropfen: Artenidentifikation mittels eDNA", Vid introduced background and approaches for species identification from environmental samples including environmental DNA (eDNA). The participants learned what is needed to perform a biodiversity analysis from eDNA, such as water, soil. or even air and discussed ideas on how and where such approaches can be optimally used. Following the presentation, a workshop on collecting eDNA from water and detection of fish species was conducted. Using water from the Lake Millstatt, participants had a chance to filter eDNA from water and purifying it using a fast DNA extraction kit. Using a portable toolset, participants tried to detect selected fish species from their DNA samples. Together, workshop participants agreed that combining novel technologies and traditional knowledge on species can significantly improve biodiversity conservation.
