Medical Engineering - Study Program
Bachelor Degree Program Information Technologies

From stethoscope to smartwatch

It has been a long way from the first stethoscope to the modern heart rate monitors in Smartwatches - but it shows impressively what enormous progress has been made in the development of medical devices. Demographic change and the ever-increasing demands on medicine make the use of medical devices and analytical methods and their further development absolutely essential.

Applications and Solutions

Medical information technology is a rapidly growing market and is not left out by any major medical technology or IT company. The trend is towards offering total solutions - "Applications and Solutions" - and integrating modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment into the healthcare provider's information system. Graduates of the "Medical Technology" branch of study find a broad and very innovative field of activity in the economy. Specialists in modern medical technology must therefore have proven specialist knowledge as a link between technology and medicine, as well as a high level of social competence.

Students benefit from high quality teaching and practical training. Building on the fundamentals of computer science, mathematics, physics in anatomy and physiology, the technical aspect is the focus of the course: Information technologies and mobile applications are covered as well as system design and integration and signal processing.

The work in the laboratories (medical technology and augmented reality) also gives a first taste of what to expect in the professional internship in the sixth semester. The integration of this "practical semester" at home or abroad will enable the direct implementation and deepening of the already acquired knowledge in practice. The knowledge can thus be further developed "on the job" in order to optimally prepare the students for their entry into professional life.

Career opportunities await students in companies ranging from the electronics industry, equipment manufacturers or software developers to hospitals and in hospital management, rehabilitation and sports centres or in the care and home sector. Specialist knowledge is particularly in demand there, which is dealt with in the degree course: Topics such as Augmented Reality, Assisted Living (AAL), Computer Graphic, Data Science, Internet of Things (IOT) and Smart Sensors accompany students during their education.

Entry into a higher semester for HTL graduates

HTL graduates can shorten their bachelor's degree by up to one year if they have passed selected entrance examinations before starting their studies and have completed a relevant HTL. The entry requirement for the 2nd or 3rd semester is a grade point average of 2 or better in the last two annual reports (4th and 5th grade) of the HTL.

Entry into the 2nd semester is possible on an individual basis after reviewing the documents.

Study + Work

With over 100 Study & Work partner companies and organizations, CUAS offers students the opportunity to combine studying and working!

Study & Work for full-time students

  • Extent of employment: marginally up to 8h / week possible
  • Timetable: Some degree courses are organized so that Monday is a day off.

Study & Work for part-time students

  • Scope of employment: part-time up to max. 20h / week possible
  • The timetable is organized in a work-friendly way (lectures at the end of the day, weekend, blocked or online).

Profile

Students receive comprehensive knowledge in technical and medical fields. In addition, they specialize in elective modules on the subjects of Data Science, Mobile Systems Development or Internet of Things. Medical technology relies on personal support and an "open door policy". Supportive courses are also offered before and during the course of study to ensure optimal success.

What students should bring to their studies:

  • A fundamental interest and enjoyment in scientific and technical subjects.
  • A creative personality who enjoys innovative developments.
  • Logical thinking skills combined with a good command of English.
  • Curiosity and the ability to work independently.

Concrete previous knowledge is not necessary for the bachelor's degree in medical technology. Therefore, students from all types of schools can start this study program after the Matura if they bring the appropriate interest and willingness to perform. In order to facilitate the start of studies, the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences offers intensive courses in mathematics, computer science and physics. Missing university entrance qualifications can be compensated by relevant professional qualifications and attendance of the pre-study course.

The focus of the course is on the technological development of treatment processes and diagnostic methods. On the one hand, you will acquire relevant basic knowledge in computer science and mathematics, on the other hand, you will successively focus on medical technology topics
such as anatomy, physiology and imaging techniques. The contents of the course cover the entire medical technology processing chain from image and signal generation, acquisition and processing to the visualization of these data (e.g. ultrasound, CT,
thermography). Starting in the third semester, the topics Data Science, Mobile Systems Development or Internet of Things are available in an elective module. In addition to the work placement, the focus will be on Business English and project management.

Job & Career

Graduates of the Medical Technology degree program find a broad and very innovative field of activity in the economy. Specialists in modern medical technology must therefore have proven specialist knowledge as a link between technology and medicine, as well as a high level of social competence.

Fields of activity are in medical technology companies, software development, analysis, IT consulting companies in the health care sector. Well-qualified medical technicians are sought in medical technology companies, software companies in the field of medical informatics, research institutions and in the approval of medical devices. They are needed for development, production and product management, as application specialists and medical product consultants. A good technical education in combination with medical knowledge and legal framework conditions are of primary importance.

The tasks include for example

  • cooperation in the development of medical information systems, medical devices, medical equipment, etc.
  • software and application development (planning, analysis, design, programming, implementation and maintenance)
  • web programming
  • Database design and development fields of activity in medical technology in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, medical practices

Hospitals need qualified personnel for support, maintenance, tendering and purchasing of medical devices. Good technical competence and knowledge of the relevant standards and laws are decisive success factors for this field of application. The tasks include, for example:

  • the commissioning or integration of medical devices
  • the performance or organisation of safety inspections in accordance with the Medical Devices Act and relevant applicable ordinances
  • consulting in the field of medical technology, medical informatics in hospitals or health care facilities
  • the instruction of device users in the proper handling of medical devices and systems
  • the maintenance and servicing of medical devices in accordance with the Medical Devices Act
  • participation in patient care and hospital planning fields of activity in the field of research

The graduates are involved in research/development in the field of medical technology.

Campus & Arrival

Campus Primoschgasse

Klagenfurt combines joie de vivre, nature and culture. The city of just over 100,000 inhabitants on Lake Wörthersee is a recreational area that fulfils every wish. Slovenia and Italy are not far away, the mountains are within reach. Klagenfurt's cultural scene is also vibrant, with clubs, stages and museums. The Old Square with its many shops, restaurants and cafés is the centre of city life. The idyllic Lendkanal connects the city with the lake and, like Kreuzbergl, is a popular destination for amateur sportsmen and nature lovers.
The campus in Primoschgasse has perfect transport connections - a separate bus line stops directly in front of the FH on the Südring. The view from the roof terrace onto the mountain panorama surrounding Klagenfurt offers the perfect space for relaxing breaks.
