Upon successful completion of the course, students know:

  • The process for conducting a systematic literature review,
  • the process for structuring research projects,
  • ideal-typical research designs in qualitative social research,
  • ideal-typical research designs in quantitative social research,
  • the most important application possibilities and fields of application of qualitative survey methods (expert interviews, focus group interviews) and quantitative survey methods (standardized surveys) in empirical social research
  • selected evaluation procedures for qualitative surveys (explorative and content-analytical procedures)
  • selected evaluation procedures for quantitative surveys (univariate, bivariate and multivariate data analysis)
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to:
  • define a research question they would like to address as part of their Master's thesis,
  • select the appropriate research design to answer this research question,
  • design the research process,
  • develop the appropriate data collection instruments,
  • apply the relevant evaluation procedures,
  • prepare an exposé on their chosen Master's thesis topic.
