Students know and are able to apply the entity-relationship model, the relational model and the principles of schema design (incl. 3rd normal form). They can develop simple database applications in which simple but also complex queries are directed to the database and they know and understand the techniques of transaction processing.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Conceptual database design (ER modeling)
  • Relational data model and relational algebra
  • Logical database design (ER schema restructuring, transformation from ER schema to relational DB schema)
  • Data definition and data manipulation with SQL
  • Multi-user operation
  • Formal database design (normalization theory)

The following basic literature will be used in the course:

  • Kemper, A. Eickler: Datenbanksysteme: Eine Einführung, Oldenbourg-Verlag, 8th updated and extended edition, 2011;
  • P.Atzeni et al: Database Systems: Concepts, Languages, Architectures, McGraw-Hill, 1999;
Further relevant literature will be announced during the course (if necessary).

Lecture with subsequent exercises, accompanying tutorial offered (complementary to the curriculum).
