Students are able to describe relevant terms related to hospital, drinking water and food hygiene and infection epidemiology, and can reflect on the importance of surveillance measures; they can use geographical information systems and the corresponding analysis software; they can assess the significance for clinical diagnostics / monitoring / surveillance, link infection-hygienic examination results (if necessary patient-related), check their plausibility and integrate them into an overall picture; they can document the results of the investigation with existing information technologies and carry out the storage, transport and disposal of examination materials and reagents properly.
On the basis of the present laboratory results, the students are able to logically select and justify possible further laboratory analysis.

- Hospital hygiene, hygiene team, hygiene management, specific disinfection and prevention measures
- Infection statistics, antibiotic stewardship
- Basics of infectious epidemiology: Importance and tasks, principles, methods and concepts, outbreak investigations, geographic information systems, analysis software
- Hand hygiene and compliance
- Surveillance using the example of selected nosocomial infections (such as Noroviruses, C. difficile)
- Surveillance and resistance diagnostics using pathogens with special resistance and multidrug resistance (search as MRSA, ESBL)
- Hospital hygiene and environmental investigations including pre- and post-analysis, quality assurance, method selection
- Analytical methods and methods for the microbiological analysis of drinking and mineral water according to drinking water regulations including quality assurance
- Food testing, selected methods, pre- and post-analysis as well as quality assurance
