In this module, students learn to deal with space in its geographical, physical and social dimensions. Students acquire basic knowledge of regional development, regional planning, landscape planning and land use planning (RP) and are able to identify spatial challenges and their specific problems in urban and rural areas and to develop solutions. Furthermore, the course promotes the ability to think in an interdisciplinary and networked way and to answer questions regarding regional development, regional planning, landscape planning and land use planning from a social, ecological and economic perspective.
The students are able to

  • structure and correctly classify the areas of responsibility in the fields of regional development, regional planning, landscape planning and spatial use
  • understand and analyze habitats and land-related conflicts of interest
  • recognize challenges in spatial development, spatial planning and land use and develop approaches to solving them
  • critically consider, reflect on and discuss spatial planning measures
  • understand and classify levels and institutions of spatial planning and development
  • structure and typify areas
  • critically consider and discuss spatial and sectoral planning issues with regard to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • identify and evaluate social, ecological and economic functions of space
  • interpret relevant legal regulations and present factual arguments
  • cvreate and present a fictitious spatial development concept on the basis of a specific example
  • use web-based geoinformation systems for the analysis of spatially specific questions
  • investigate specific geodata (including cadastral maps)
  • plan participatory processes for sustainable RP

Basics in Regional Planning (RP) exploring the following questions:

  • Which strategies and instruments are used in RP?
  • Which tasks are assigned to the different levels?
  • How can web-based geoinformation systems be used for a representation and analysis of spatial issues?
  • Which specific challenges can be localized in urban and rural areas?
  • How can spatial planning measures contribute to the goals of the SDGs?
  • How can modern technologies contribute to sustainable RP?
