Based on an understanding of the physiological and pathophysiological regulatory mechanisms of the human organism, students are able to perform pulmonary, cardiovascular and neurophysiological functional diagnostics according to a doctor's order. The students have acquired an understanding of the physical-technical processes involved in the respective functional investigation, know the technical basics of the respective examination procedure, the indications or contraindications for pulmonary, cardiovascular and neurophysiological functional examinations and master measures of error detection and correction as well as quality assurance. Furthermore, they will be able to recognize life-threatening conditions, which can also occur as part of the functional diagnostic examination, and will be ableto provide appropriate first aid. They are in the position to create a quality-assured diagnostic result for medical diagnosis or therapy monitoring, to document them by means of information technologies and to communicate them adequately to the clinical staff. The students in particular understand the significance of the findings and their consequences for therapeutic decisions, they are aware of the importance of functional diagnostic studies in the field of pulmonology, cardiology, angiology, neurology, neurophysiology and somnology in the context of the overall medical care and can reflect on their own actions in a medical and social context.

Modules of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd semester

  • Physical and technical fundamentals of pulmonary, cardiovascular and neurophysiological functional diagnostics
  • Functional diagnostic applications in pulmonology, indications and contraindications as well as the clinical significance of respiratory physiological analysis methods such as spirometry, body-plethysmography, further examinations, e.g. bronchospasmolysis test, provocation test including execution of the investigation and presentation of the results
  • Functional diagnostic applications in cardiology/angiology and neurology/neurophysiology/somnology, indication and contraindication, as well as the clinical significance of cardiovascular and neurophysiological analysis methods such as electroencephalography, electromyography, evoked potentials, electroneurography, polysomnography, electrocardiography, sonography basics, stress ECG including conducting the investigation and presentation of the results
  • Plausibility check of results, findings and documentation, simple interpretation of pulmonary function diagnostics findings
  • Measures to detect and correct the most common measurement errors
  • Quality assurance measures in pulmonary functional testing, cardiovascular and neurophysiological functional diagnostics
