The students are aware of the societal, economic and technological challenges facing the transition to a greener economy and industry (with a focus on Energy Transition).
Students understand the necessity to preserve/spare ressources.
The students know the basics, through examples from different engineering disciplines, of lightweight construction and circular economy (incl. recycling, Life Cycle Analysis).
Students are familiar with Green Design techniques to reduce the ecological impact of existing solutions and of their own future designs. They are aware of the necessity to preserve the environnement and its biodiversity.
Students are able to develop customized technical solutions for the monitoring and the protection of the environment.

The module covers the following topics/contents:

  • Energy dependence of our modern society
  • The societal, economic and technological challenges of the transition to non-fossil fuels
  • Alternative electric energy production and storage systems (incl. renewables)
  • Introduction to lightweight construction techniques (incl. topology optimization)- circular economy and Life-Cycle-Analysis (the basics)
  • Ecodesign for Systems Designers (introduction)
  • Importance of biodiversity and consequences of its diminution
  • Systems Design for the monitoring and the protection of the environment (case studies)
