The students are able to understand the development and implementation of projects in automation technology and to evaluate the necessary methods.
They can differentiate between individual systems and can understand their connections holistically.
They are able to select suitable sensors and corresponding I/O modules for automation tasks and to program PLC systems in practical exercises.
They can use bus systems correctly according to the area of application.
The students can develop modern and intuitive operating concepts (HMI, SCADA).

The module covers the following topics/contents:

  • Basic structure of automation systems in process, manufacturing, energy or building technology, industrial IOT, higher-level systems ERP/MES
  • Programmable logic controller / PLC and safety-related controls, various IOs (digital, analog, drive technology, etc.) and their specifications, programming languages according to IEC 61131-3 and programming tools for automation systems, application of robotics and kinematics, each with practical exercises
  • Automation technology bus systems
  • Operation and operating concepts (HMI and SCADA) with practical exercises.
  • Further topics: Optimization and project planning of automation systems, machine learning, data science, cybersecurity, digital twin, virtual reality

  • S. Manesis, Introduction to Industrial Automation, CRC Press, 2020
  • G. Blokdyk, Industrial Automation, A Complete Guide, 5STARCooks, 2021
