The students understand the biogenesis, properties, structure and function of cells and their central importance as prerequisites of life. They gain profound knowledge of molecular processes at the cellular level, i.e. they know the basic building blocks of the genetic code and understand their structure, function and mechanisms as well as disturbances of the transmission of genetic information. They understand the protein biosynthesis as a result of the translation of the genetic information as well as important cellular processes including the controlled expression of the genetic information.

  • Biological organization levels and systematics (organization of eukaryotic cells, membranes, transporters, endo- and exocytosis, lysosomes, Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, cytoskeleton, cell movement, cells in the tissue association, nucleus, chromosomes and cell division, cell cycle)
  • General basics of the genome (chromosomes, structure and function of genes, biochemical structure of nucleic acids), molecular processes such as replication, transcription, translation and protein biosynthesis, genetic alterations, gene regulation and gene expression
  • Energy metabolism and mitochondria
  • Basics of signal transduction
  • Basics of epigenetics
  • Development of mutations and their effects
