According to European Union Standards for Nursing and Midwifery (Vgl. FH-Heb-AV StF: BGBl. II Nr. 1/2006 (Version 2016)) midwifery students shall support and assist the mothers during the postpartum period. They have basic knowledge about nursing diagnoses, nursing processes and their documentation, and are able to apply this knowledge in the context of practical exercises. The maintenance actions can be performed professionally.
Other course contents are the physical, psychosocial and mental change and adaptation processes, the bond between mother and child and different needs of couples and families.

The graduates know the regular processes during the course of the puerperium. Breast feeding and healthy developement of the newborn are seen as the highest priority. Students shall also gain experience in lactation counselling, the first latch and the initial treatment of the newborn postpartum. They shall be able to set adequate supportive measures and to explain all taken examinations.
Students learn about the basics of extrauterine adaptation processes of the newborn and nutrition of the infant.
Students also know about the different models of care and know the practical tasks of midwives in hospital. They know the differences about midwifery out-of-hospital care. Students know about the importance of preventive measures and health promotion.
