According to European Union Standards for Nursing and Midwifery (Vgl. FH-Heb-AV StF: BGBl. II Nr. 1/2006 (Version 2016)) gynecological and obstetric pathology is a part of the training programme for obtaining evidence of formal qualifications in midwifery. The training program for obtaining evidence of formal qualifications in midwifery also includes knowledge about analgesia, anaesthesia and resuscitation, pathology of gynaecology and obstetrics.
Midwives are trained to recognize the warning signs of abnormality in the mother or infant which necessitate referral to a doctor and assisting the latter where appropriate. Midwives prescribe or advise on examinations necessary for the earliest possible diagnosis of pregnancies at risk, midwives are trained for taking the necessary emergency measures in the doctor's absence in particular the manual removal of the placenta, possibly followed by manual examination of the uterus. Midwives are supposed to care for and to assist mothers during labor and monitor the condition of the fetus in utero by the appropriate clinical and technical measures.
Students will acquire methodological and analytical skills to recognize signs of deviations and pathological courses in mother and child during birth time and to accompany with appropriate measures or to dominate. The graduates are able to explain the basics of evidence-based, process-oriented counseling and support to pregnant women and to implement, promote regular right proportions and support effective measures to promote, maintain and restore health.
