Based on an understanding of the principles of the physiological and pathophysiological/pathobiochemical regulatory mechanisms of the human organism students are able to, based on a doctor´s order, carry out the biomedical analysis process (consisting of the preanalytical, analytical and post-analytical phase) in medical chemistry as part of the overall medical process independently and autonomously; they i.e.:
- Can assign the relevant measurement to bioanalytical and medical questions and understand the requirement with regard to the requested laboratory tests and can judge whether the available examination material is suitable for the requested biomedical analyzes
- Know the preanalytical influencing and method-dependent disturbance variables and their effects on the respective laboratory examinations
- Can select, critically assess and evaluate the medical-chemical analysis methods, in particular spectrometric and immunological methods according to the research question
- Know the basic reaction processes in the analysis process and recognize them in the automated processes
- Based on their knowledge of measurement processes, evaluation, method-specific measured values, measurement results and calculation methods, they can critically assess and evaluate the functionality of current and new laboratory equipment
- Are able to select appropriate laboratory analytical steps, measures and medical-chemical analyzes (focus on spectrometric and immunological methods) for different sample materials including the analysis of special body fluids (i.e. liquor, punctates, ejaculates) and to independently analyse them with the appropriate measurement techniques, verification and assessment procedures and with the help of working instructions
- Are able to coordinate work processes and to schedule them efficiently
- Can independently carry out and assess the subject-specific quality assurance measures
- Can identify simple mistakes in the implementation of a method, allocate them correctly and correct them as far as possible
- Can document the test results with existing information technologies
- Can properly handle the storage of assay materials and reagents
- Are able to critically validate laboratory results (technically and biomedically) assess the significance for clinical diagnostics patient-related, check their plausibility and integrate them into an overall picture
- Are able to logically select and justify possible further laboratory analyzes based on the available laboratory results
In addition, students are able to independently acquire capillary and venous blood specimens according to a doctor's order and to further process them for the requested biomedical analysis.
Modules of the 1st and 2nd semester
- Spectrometric analysis methods: atomic absorption spectrometry, mass spectrometry and luminescence measurement including pre- and post-analysis by means of selected parameters in medical-chemical analysis
- Immunoblotting, immunofluorescence technique, flow cytometry including pre-and post-analysis exemplary for laboratory analysis of autoimmune and allergy diagnostic, immune status or vaccination status (e.g., HBV, HAV)
- Therapeutic drug monitoring: methods for determination of the plasma and serum concentrations of medications, including pre- and post-analytics, as well as the basics of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
- Methods and procedures of intoxication analysis, including pre- and post-analysis, exemplary using selected parameters (e.g. alcohols, salicylates) including drug screening
- Special medical-chemical laboratory analysis of other body fluids (i.e.: cerebrospinal fluid, feces, ejaculate or punctates) including pre- and post-analysis, using selected parameters
- Laboratory exercises: physicochemical, enzymological, immunochemical, electrochemical, immunological and spectrometric analysis methods, special analysis of additional body fluids, documentation, technical and biomedical validation of the results (including workplace preparation and follow-up)
