The students are familiar with the clinical-epidemiological key concepts and applications of statistics in the life andhealth sciences, medicine and in particular biomedical analysis and are able to assess an empirical study according to scientific criteria. In addition, they know the basic statistical concepts, can apply different types of data acquisition, processing and presentation contextual; they master the basic biometric procedures (descriptive and inductive statistics) and can perform corresponding statistical calculations problem-related and independently and interpret the results in a context-sensitive manner. They are able to assess epidemiological studies and perform independent calculations of selected epidemiological parameters.

Modules of the 1st and 2nd Semester

  • Introduction to clinical epidemiology and biometry
  • Descriptive statistics (scale of measure, frequency, characterization of data by parameters, graphical representations, bivariate analysis, interpretation of collected data and presentation of results)
  • Inductive statistics (basic principles and applications of statistical hypothesis testing), stochastics (probability theory)
  • Test procedures (specificity, sensitivity, predictive value)
  • Data acquisition, analysis and presentation
  • Selected epidemiological study types (e.g., observational studies, intervention studies, diagnostic studies)
  • Interpretation and biometric calculation of selected epidemiological parameters (e.g., prevalence, incidence)
  • Effect size (association between disease and exposure): e.g. relative risk, odds ratio, attributable risk
  • Random and systematic errors, internal and external validity, stratification procedures
