Students shall be able to diagnose birth injuries properly and if necessary to suture and to provide adequate care afterwards. They shall know the indications for placing an episiotomy by heart and perform it lege artis.

According to European Union Standards for Nursing and Midwifery students are required to gain knowledge about the performance of episiotomy and the initiation into suturing. Initiation shall include theoretical instruction and clinical practice. The practice of suturing includes suturing of the wound
after an episiotomy and a simple perineal laceration. Practice-oriented knowledge of the pelvic floor muscles, prevention of perineal tear, diagnosis, analgesia, treatment, cure and care is taught in this class.
