The students have an understanding of the bearing mechanism of doubly curved shells. They van calculate simple shells of revolution by hand. They have knowledge of the complicated phenomena of shell buckling and are able to apply the European design rules for (cylindrical) steel shells to problems of practical interest.

Foundations of differential geometry. Membran and bending theory of shells of revolution including simple applications. Membran theory of flat shells. Buckling of cylindrical shells. European Design Recommendations of Steel Shells.
