Students are able to understand the pathogenesis, the pathophysiological and basic pathobiochemical processes of cardiovascular diseases, blood disorders, liver metabolism disorders, coagulation disorders, amino acid metabolism disorders, protein biosynthesis, enzyme biosynthesis and enzyme distribution, carbohydrate metabolism, water, electrolyte and acid-base balance; as well as to explain disturbances of hormonal regulation and to describe lipid metabolism disorders, malabsorption and maldigestion including etiology and symptoms and their respective consequences for the human organism.

Modules of the 1st semester

Pathobiochemistry and pathogenesis / pathophysiology of (the)

  • hormonal regulation (insulin / glucagon / adrenaline / other contra-insular substances) of the carbohydrate metabolism
  • biosynthesis, lipid transport and regulation, uptake and release into and out of the cells and organs; congenital and acquired hyper- and hypolipoproteinemias
  • congenital disorders of amino acid metabolism, protein biosynthesis, enzyme biosynthesis and enzyme distribution
  • congenital and acquired porphyrias, hyperbilirubinemia (enterohepatic circulation) and liver metabolism disorders
  • water and electrolyte metabolism and the acid-base Balance
  • diseases of the digestive tract (maldigestion and malabsorption)
  • developmental disorders of blood cells and hemoglobin synthesis, including reactive and malignant changes in the blood
  • hemostasis (hypocoagulability, hypercoagulability, hyperfibrinolysis and consumption coagulopathy)
  • breakdown of hormones, hormonal regulation, hormone transport and receptor systems; pathogenesis of functional disorders of hormonal control circuits (hierarchy of the endocrine system) exemplified by the diseases of: thyroid, adrenal, pancreas, pituitary, hypothalamus, gonads
  • all including the etiology and symptoms of the disorders
