In early December, first-semester students of the Bachelor’s program in Digital Marketing & Sales at Carinthia University of Applied Sciences had the unique opportunity to participate in an inspiring Smartphone Photography Workshop.

The event was designed and led by the program’s director, Bernhard Guetz, together with accomplished photo artist Johanna Dulnigg. By combining theoretical instruction with hands-on practice in the picturesque setting of Villach’s city center, the workshop provided an unforgettable learning experience that blended education, creativity and local culture.

The workshop commenced at the Carinthia International Center (CIC), where the students were warmly greeted by Ervin Kalender. He offered an engaging introduction to the CIC’s activities and its role in fostering academic and creative projects, setting an enthusiastic tone for the day. Following this, Johanna and Bernhard transformed the venue into a dynamic photography studio, where the students delved into the basics of smartphone photography.

The session began with an in-depth exploration of the technical and artistic advantages of smartphone cameras. Johanna and Bernhard emphasized the convenience and portability of these devices, their advanced camera capabilities and the ease with which images can be shared instantly on social media platforms. These features, they explained, make smartphones powerful tools not only for personal use but also for professional purposes, particularly in the fields of marketing and digital content creation.

The theoretical segment then transitioned to practical techniques for improving photography. The students were introduced to essential compositional strategies, including the rule of thirds, leading lines and framing, all designed to enhance the aesthetic appeal of their images. The workshop also covered the importance of mastering lighting and exposure, explaining how to use natural and artificial light to create depth and mood. Techniques for experimenting with backlighting, sidelighting and front-facing light were demonstrated, along with tips for controlling exposure settings to achieve professional-quality results.

Creativity in Action
With a solid foundation in place, the students eagerly moved on to the practical segment of the workshop, where theory was brought to life. Indoors, the students experimented with various styles of photography. They captured portraits, exploring how to position subjects and adjust lighting to create impactful images. Macro photography exercises allowed them to focus on small details, highlighting textures and patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed. Product photography sessions provided a glimpse into the precision required for commercial applications, while low-light photography challenged them to push the limits of their smartphone cameras.

After honing their skills indoors, the workshop shifted outdoors, where Villach’s vibrant cityscape became the students’ creative playground. The group participated in Villach’s Photopoint Challenge, an exercise that encouraged them to capture the essence of the city through their lenses. Whether photographing historical landmarks, modern architecture, or bustling streets, the students were encouraged to apply the techniques they had learned. They experimented with natural light, incorporated leading lines to add depth to their compositions and used creative framing to highlight Villach’s unique charm.

Johanna and Bernhard maintained an engaging and hands-on approach throughout, offering personalized feedback and encouragement. Their guidance helped the students to not only improve their technical skills but also to develop a creative eye, inspiring them to see the world in new ways.

A Memorable Experience
The Smartphone Photography Workshop proved to be much more than a lesson in taking better photos. It was an immersive experience that demonstrated how technology, creativity, and education can come together to create something truly impactful. The students gained practical skills that will be invaluable for their studies and future careers, particularly in fields where visual storytelling is key. They also discovered the joy of capturing their surroundings in ways that are both meaningful and artistic.

This workshop will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on the participants. It highlighted the potential of smartphones as tools for creative expression and professional development and demonstrated how hands-on, experiential learning can bring education to life. Such initiatives underscore CUAS commitment to providing innovative and meaningful educational experiences that prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the modern world. Special thanks also go to Alexandra Truppe and Ervin Kalender from the Carinthia International Center, whose hospitality and support ensured the workshop ran smoothly and provided an excellent space for learning and creativity.
