Amidst the cold rain, on the morning of 23rd May, we embarked on an exciting journey as part of IBM’s Strategic Management course, guided by Prof. Dr. Dietmar Sternard and Kristof Dudas, 4th semester IBM student. Our adventure took us to some of the most innovative companies in Graz, Austria, and Budapest, Hungary.

Day 1: Knapp AG - Masters of Automation

Our first stop was Knapp AG, a pioneer in logistics automation and warehouse management. Their cutting-edge technology in warehouse automation and robotics left us in awe. We got hands-on experience with their systems, making this visit a perfect start to our trip. The company's relentless push for innovation set quite a high bar for the rest of our excursion. After this, we all went to have dinner together and explored Budapest in the most student way possible – by partying!

Day 2: OTP Bank and Gedeon Richter - Banking and Pharma Excellence

The next day, after a hearty breakfast, we headed to OTP Bank, one of Hungary's largest financial institutions. Their focus on digital transformation to attract younger generations was inspiring. We learned how they blend traditional banking with modern tech, staying ahead in a rapidly changing market.

Before our next visit, we squeezed in some sightseeing. We marveled at Liberty Bridge and indulged in authentic Hungarian cuisine at a traditional market. Next, we visited Gedeon Richter, a leading pharmaceutical company renowned for its research in women’s health. Touring their R&D labs and learning about their rigorous drug development process was a highlight. The excursion ended with a fascinating exhibition on the company’s founder and his historical significance. Later, we all proceeded to take a yacht tour on the Danube and built nostalgic memories.

Day 3: MOL Group - Energy and Sustainability

On our last day in Budapest, before returning to Villach we had a final stop on the way! MOL Group is Hungary's largest company and a giant in the energy sector. We delved into their global operations and strategies to tackle challenges like fluctuating oil prices and regulatory changes. Their commitment to sustainability through projects like solar power plants and waste-to-energy initiatives was particularly impressive. To bring our excursion to an end, we visited the MOL tower and glimpsed upon the entire sight of Budapest as well.

Reflections: A Blend of Learning and Culture

This excursion was more than just company visits; it was a rich blend of professional insights and cultural experiences. We bonded with our peers, tasted the best of Hungarian cuisine, and learned from some of the top companies in the region. Knapp AG showed us the future of logistics, OTP Bank demonstrated the power of digital transformation, Gedeon Richter emphasized the importance of R&D, and MOL Group highlighted the need for sustainability.

Looking back, this trip was a fantastic journey through innovation, strategy, and culture. I can’t wait for next year’s students to embark on this exciting adventure with the International Strategic Management course.
