HUMANITA Summer School Program

About the course

Learn how to monitor visitors and their impacts on the environment. Get to know methods that can help you understand the spatial and temporal distribution of visitors. Use acoustic sensors, wildlife cameras as well as laboratory toolkits to investigate wildlife. Apply drones and handheld photogrammetric and LiDAR devices to measure erosion processes. Learn how to involve locals and visitors into the documentation of environmental pressures as Citizen Scientist.

Organisation & Workload

The HUMANITA Summer School will be held from 14 to 17 July, 2025, with a total workload of 2 ECTS. This four-day programme includes two days on campus and two field days.

On the first day, you will be introduced to the HUMANITA project, exploring human-nature conflicts and the challenges of managing protected areas, particularly in visitor management. Days 2 and 3 will be dedicated to fieldwork, where you will apply various monitoring methods and collect data. On the final day, you will transfer the collected data to a server and learn how to analyse acoustic, optical, laboratory, and spatial data.

To earn the certificate participants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Attendance during the field week
  • Active participation in discussions and activities
  • Group presentation on field work and data assessment
  • Submission of a logbook documenting key insights and reflections on monitoring methods (1-2 pages per monitoring method)
