BiDiTEch Lab is a groundbreaking project funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), which provides an opportunity to acquire research infrastructure worth €2.5 million.

This initiative will enable the establishment of a field laboratory, mobile labs, and significant computing and storage capacities. Biodiversity research is undergoing a transformation from expert-based to technology-driven data collection methods. This shift is propelled by disruptive technologies from various fields such as sensor technology, robotics, data science, and molecular biology, which are evolving rapidly through cumulative innovations. Our project focuses on the opportunities and challenges presented by these biodiversity technologies (BiDiTechs).

The advantages of technological advancements in biodiversity research are clear: improved time efficiency and reduced burden on experts allow for the collection of large, high-quality datasets. Technological methods also ensure the reproducibility of results over extended periods. For start-ups and innovative companies, new opportunities arise that should be leveraged thoughtfully. Investors may also recognize the potential to advance technologies for biodiversity assessment. This project represents a significant step forward in equipping researchers with the tools needed to address the complex challenges of biodiversity conservation in the coming decade.

Project duration: December 2024 – December 2026.
